Leo Breiman

1928–2005

Statistician who introduced random forests in 2001, combining bagging with decision trees.

Breiman proposed random forests in 2001, an ensemble method that trains many decision trees on bootstrapped samples and random feature subsets. The approach became a standard tool in machine learning alongside support vector machines before the deep learning revival.
