Bernhard Boser

UC Berkeley EECS professor who co-authored the 1992 optimal margin classifier paper and the 1989 zip-code CNN work at AT&T Bell Labs.

Boser worked at AT&T Bell Laboratories with Yann LeCun on the 1989 convolutional neural network that read handwritten zip codes. With Isabelle Guyon and Vladimir Vapnik, he combined the kernel trick with maximum-margin classifiers in 1992, paving the way for support vector machines.
