Vladimir Vapnik

1936

Statistical learning theorist who co-created support vector machines and structural risk minimisation.

Vapnik developed statistical learning theory and, with Corinna Cortes, published support vector machines in 1995. His earlier work on the kernel trick with Bernhard Boser and Isabelle Guyon helped SVMs dominate machine learning through the 1990s.
