Arthur Samuel

1901–1990

IBM engineer whose 1950s checkers program was among the first to learn by playing itself.

Samuel’s checkers program improved through self-play and feature learning, an early demonstration of machine learning decades before the term was common. He attended the 1956 Dartmouth workshop and helped show that computers could refine their own play rather than rely only on fixed rules.
