Artificial general intelligence (AGI)

Hypothetical AI that matches or exceeds human-level competence across many tasks, not the same as a narrow model or today's LLM chatbot.

Artificial general intelligence (AGI) is a speculative milestone: a system with broad, flexible competence across domains, not limited to one narrow task. It sits in long-range AI debate, distinct from today’s mostly specialized models.

Capable LLMs in chatbots can look general-purpose yet remain brittle on planning, tools, and facts; they are not AGI by most definitions. Some AI agents stretch toward broader autonomy but still fall short of the label. Superintelligence (ASI) is a further hypothetical step beyond human-level general ability. Related ideas include the technological singularity and alignment under stronger systems.
