Claude Shannon
Mathematician who founded information theory and sketched one of the first chess-playing programs.
Shannon’s 1948 paper on information theory gave AI researchers a language for measuring uncertainty and signal. In 1950 he published a paper on programming a computer for chess, outlining how lookahead search could guide machine play. His ideas bridged communication, computation, and game-playing research.
