Alex Bernstein
IBM researcher who demonstrated early computer chess at the 1956 Dartmouth workshop.
At the Dartmouth summer project in 1956, Bernstein showed a chess program running on an IBM 704, one of the first serious attempts to teach a machine to play a complex game. His work sat alongside McCarthy’s alpha-beta pruning ideas in the earliest discussions of game-tree search.
