Alan Turing

1912–1954

British mathematician whose 1950 paper on the imitation game shaped how we ask whether machines can think.

Turing helped lay the foundations of modern computing and proposed the Turing test as a practical benchmark for machine intelligence. His wartime codebreaking at Bletchley Park showed how computation could solve problems once thought impossible. He remains one of the most cited figures in the history of AI.
