DeepMind

DeepMind (now Google DeepMind) is a research lab founded in London in 2010 by Demis Hassabis, Shane Legg, and Mustafa Suleyman, and acquired by Google in 2014. It became famous for combining deep learning, reinforcement learning, and large-scale compute on hard problems.

Public milestones include AlphaGo (2016), beating a top Go professional, and AlphaFold, which predicts protein structures and helped win a share of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. The lab also contributes to Google’s Gemini model family. It is an organisation, not a single model: many systems share methods and data scale rather than one architecture.
