Gemini 2.0 and the start of the agentic era (2024)
Google's Gemini 2.0, launched in December 2024, was pitched as a model for the agentic era: systems that do not just answer, but take multi-step actions on your behalf.
On December 11, 2024, Google released the first model in the Gemini 2.0 family and framed it around a single word: agents. Where earlier assistants mostly answered questions, Google’s pitch was that 2025 would be the year software began to act, taking multi-step actions with your supervision rather than just returning text.
From answering to acting
An AI agent is a system that plans and carries out a task over several steps: reading a screen, clicking, calling tools, checking results, and trying again. Alongside Gemini 2.0 Flash, Google showed research prototypes pointing in that direction: Project Mariner, an experimental extension that navigates a web browser for you; Project Astra, a universal assistant; and Jules, a coding agent. A separate Deep Research feature used long context to compile reports on a topic on your behalf.
The model itself was natively multimodal, handling text, images, and audio, and built for the “native tool use” that agents depend on.
Part of a broader turn
Gemini 2.0 did not invent this idea, and it was not alone. The move toward deliberate, multi-step behavior had been building through 2024, from reasoning-focused systems like OpenAI o1 to Anthropic’s experiments with letting a model use a computer. Google’s contribution was to put agents at the center of a flagship large language model and a consumer product, rather than treating them as a side experiment.
Why it matters
The shift from chatbot to agent is more than a feature. It changes the questions that matter: not only “is the answer correct?” but “did it take the right actions, and what happens when it is wrong?” Handing software the ability to click, buy, and send raises the stakes on reliability, oversight, and security. Gemini 2.0 marked the moment the big labs started betting publicly that the next era would be agentic, a bet the rest of 2025 would test in a hurry.
